Cell Chip, HD-DVD, McAfee vs. Microsoft, etc

11.30.2004
Sony has partnered with IBM and Toshiba to start production of a new "cell" chip. This chip has supposed clock frequencies of 16 teraflops. We're not quite sure how it's manufactured but, it will be used in Sony's new PS3. ExtremeTech.com TechNewsWorld

Speaking of Toshiba... the recent battle between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD standards has heated up. The Toshiba HD-DVD standard has won endorsment of 4/5 (New Line Cinema, Paramount, Universal and Warner Brothers) of the major movie studios. Blu-Ray is backed by big electronic companies such as Sony, Dell, HP, Hitachi, Philips, and Samsung.
That could be a boon for HD DVD, which also has a backward-compatibility advantage with today's DVD hardware. Some experts, however, insist the future format will be driven by the PC, which is largely behind Blu-ray. TechNewsWorld
McAfee and Microsoft are currently partnered to bring Anti-Virus and spam control to MSN 9.0. McAfee reported this week that Microsoft had not extended its contract to include the soon to be released MSN 10.0. McAfee also claims that it will begin to see increased competition in Cisco, but believes that it will to continue to succedd. I don't use MSN (Cox Internet, Google for web search) of McAfee (Norton Internet Security and AVG Free), so this really dosen't affect me. MSN is cruddy, like most of Microsoft's knock-offs; and McAfee isn't worth the money when Norton is available and much, much better (my opinion) and while AVG is so free... Forbes.com

Microsoft is also developing software to allow users to access their media from the internet... very, very cool. ZDNet.com

A failed upgrade to UK government computers put over 60,000 out for four days. Not suprising. ExtremeTech.com

Microsoft also confirmed a flaw in the WINS (Windows Internet Name Service) that could allow malicious code execution. Read more at ExtremeTech.com

Arthur Hailey, Froogle Wish List, Free XP, and Boycotting Christmas?

11.26.2004
Today Arthur Hailey, author of best-selling thrillers Airplane and Hotel which later became blockbuster movies, died yesterday in his sleep. He'll be missed... story.

Froogle Wish List has been released. Now, you don't have to write a Christmas List down, introducing Froogle Wish List. If you are familiar with Froogle, it's Google's (Beta) merchant serch. They've also improved several other things, read the Google Blog post, then check out the real thing. This can be real powerful if bundled with ForeEver Geek's Geek's Holiday Gift Christmas Guide.

For those of you in Britian, if you have a pirated version of Win XP, you can send it into Microsoft and get a free copy of (legit) XP. Don't have much details becuause nothing of that caliber has been used by Microsoft in the US. Article here.

Are you tired of Christmas? Some people have... introducing The Christmas Resistance Movement. They are boycotting Christmas... no lights, presents, shopping, no nothing of the sort. Well, check it out for yourself.

Other wise, i had a great Thanksgiving with my family, they're all great. Even had a great fried turkey (although i didn't eat much) thanks to Mr. Pete for that! It just reminded what Thanksgiving really is; we were out in the middle of the woods at a small Louisiana State Park, Jimmie Davis State Park. NO cell service, internet, telephone, cable, or even broadcast TV. But all in all, i learned that i have much to be thankful for... the LORD has blessed me beyond reason... which brings me back to the previous headline. These people have gotten Christmas all wrong. It's not about the gifts, lights, shopping, wrapping, trees, candy, or even Santa Claus. It's all about Jesus... the real Reason for the season. So, this Christmas, remeber what it's really about... Jesus. Sit down with the family and read Luke 2. Because the meaning of Christmas is in the word... Christ = Jesus, Mas= Worship.

FireFox Portable, Windows Avalon Preview, Apple Euro, etc.

11.20.2004
FireFox (my favorite browser) has been unofficially compiled to be able to fit onto a USB key to allow you to use it between machines who don't have it. It has some specially-selected optimizations to make it perform faster and extend the life of your USB key as well as a specialized launcher that will allow most of your favorite extensions to work as you switch computers.
Microsoft released a preview version of its new Avalon technology to developers and it will run on both XP and Server 2003.
I'm sure ya'll heard of the opening of Apple stores in European countries. Fans are going wild over there as it's the first time an Apple computer can be bought direct.

Hotmail has also been localized in Europe. Auctions for addresses that are thought to be famous are now going to be posted on the internet, all income from these sales are going to be donated to charity.

Also, for those of you who didn't know... Steve Jobs founded Pixar, which recently just released The incredibles, which is making millions.

Well, that's all for today. So in ending... check out Google's new Scholar Search.

Bill Gates E-Mail, FireFox So Tempting, etc.

11.19.2004
I just saw an article... Bill Gates gets an estimated 4 million e-mails a day. Onlu 2.5 million are spam. Hmm... seems like i get more than that (on my non-G-mail accts). Article, though not original one.

Why is FireFox catching on so quickly? Well, I know, because of its awesome pop-up blocker, streamlined design, and it's easy to use. InformationWeek did an article on it, so don't take it from me, check it out yourself!

nVIDIA and Intel just signed a multiyear contract authorizing nVIDIA to go where others could not. nVIDIA is also gaining speed with its newly released SPL technology. It alows for 2 video cards... very cool for hard-core gamers!

I haven't posted in a while... I was too busy playing Halo2.

Anyway, nothing important has happened yet that you probably haven't heard of yet, but here's some anyway.

  1. Google's Index Doubles, now nearly 8 billion pages.
  2. The Screen Savers is going through some rough changes. Among those, Alex, Yoshi, and Unscrewed's Martin Sargent have been laid off. I know we'll miss them. On a lighter note, Kevin and Sarah and one of the producers are still there.
  3. MSN's search reaches another beta milestone... Microsoft trying to dig it self out again. Google's still better. More info about it here.

A Haloday Poem

11.09.2004
Twas the night before Halo..

Twas the night before Halo, and all through the land, teens were waiting eagerly, with their xbox controller in hand. Waiting to play the most anticipated game of the year, going to the store and seeing sold out is there greatest fear!

Not a store in the mall nor wal-mart itself, was able to put H2 up early on the shelf. Though many prepurchased the Limited H2 edition, making sure they were early was their primary mission.

Young boys and girls asleep in their beds, with visions of Cortana and Master Chief in their heads. Dreaming of warthogs, banshees, and more, patiently waiting to see what Bungie has instore;

new villans, weapons, levels, and gear, will soon prove why Halo 2 will be again game of the year. So sleep well and sweet dreams til the game is in sight, Happy Halo day to all and to all a good night!

by Cameron G.

It's Here!

Halo 2 and FireFox 1.0 are finally here! This is probably the best day of the entire year. If you haven't preordered yet.. You probably won't get a copy for a month. You can still download FireFox, but most of Mozilla's servers are on overload, so I made it available here. Just save the file, and run.

Have fun dual-wielding and surfing safely using FireFox 1.0.

P.S.: Happy Birthday to Brandee... Rock On!
P.P.S: Halo2 release stats from Microsoft... 1.5 million pre-orders, and expected revenue of $100 million on the first day! LINK

Intel and Microsoft have unveiled their plans for a multimillion dollar ad campaign at increasing customer awareness for their Media Center Ocs; which house Intel microprocessors and are run by XP Media Center. Since the release of Media Centers, they have only gained a small fraction of the PC market, this campaign is intended to produce more revenue.

IE Hole, Apple runs Windows, T-Bird .9, etc.

11.04.2004
Well, if you havent heard by now, you are smart and are using FireFox, if not, your computer is in danger. Yep, Microsoft screwed up again (suprise?), someone found a new IE hole to add to the hundreds of others. It has to do with a buffer vulnerability, and only affects WinXP SP and Win 2K. More Here.

In other news, the Oxford Dictionary uncovers a new fact that, well, even Apple didn't know about it self... check it out.

Also, in Moz news, the 2005 Linux Summit is set to include agenda regarding Mozilla and its revolutionary browser that has started the browser wars all over again, FireFox. Mozilla also released its final pre-release version of its new E-mail client, Thunderbird. It's great... check it out!

Have a great day....

A Microsoft PalmOne Treo?

11.03.2004
There's been a lot of talk that, supposedly, PalmOne has decided to use Microsoft as its OS of choice in the new Treo 650. PalmOne is the biggest/only manufacturer of the Treo for PalmSource's OS (the companies split when the first Treo was released two years ago). This would be a major hit in PalmSource's bank... But I doubt this will ever come about. It's like an Intel-based Mac, or iTunes store integrated into Windows Media Player; some things are just meant not to happen!
